Smart Laboratory Practices in 2025

Posted on July 31, 2025

Laboratories are undergoing a real small revolution and are becoming “smarter” everyday thanks to advanced technologies and new practices. Smart laboratory practices relate to the digitization of work, the application of artificial intelligence (AI), sustainable “green” initiatives, resource optimization, and improved security. These changes are not only beneficial to scientists, but also to society, as they allow for faster discoveries, more economic operation and safer handling of hazardous materials.

Digitalization of laboratories

Many lab notes, measurements, and records are moving from paper to computers. Electronic lab logs and digital data management systems are replacing traditional notebooks, making it easier to track samples and results. The integration of digital systems enables instant data sharing and real-time collaboration, which speeds up experiments and increases the reproducibility of scientific experiments. In other words, digitization simplifies operations and reduces the possibility of error, as computers take over routine tasks such as inventory management and analysis of results.

Artificial intelligence and automation

Artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are rapidly entering laboratories. AI systems can analyze huge amounts of data much faster than humans and recognize patterns and connections that have been hidden so far. For example, machine learning helps scientists model molecules or predict the outcome of experiments. At the same time, robotic devices take on repetitive tasks such as sample processing, reducing the possibility of human error. These automated systems learn from the collected data and optimize laboratory processes in real-time. The result is faster obtaining accurate results, while freeing up time for scientists to work more creatively and come up with new ideas.

Sustainable and “green” laboratories

Modern laboratories pay great attention to sustainability. Traditionally, research has generated a lot of waste and consumed a lot of energy, but in 2025 this is changing. Laboratories are increasingly introducing energy-efficient equipment, recycling materials, and reducing the use of single-use plastics. For example, old freezers are replaced with new ones that consume less electricity, and consumables made of biodegradable materials are also used. Such green practices not only reduce the impact on the environment but also bring financial savings. Ultimately, lower energy consumption and less waste mean lower operating costs for the laboratory. This is especially important in times of limited research budgets, as sustainability goes hand in hand with efficiency.

Smart solutions to reduce the cost of procurement of laboratory resources

Laboratory equipment and reagents can be very expensive, so innovative ways to lower procurement costs are being sought. One of the smart solutions is the Wasteless platform, an online marketplace where laboratories can buy and sell surplus laboratory materials. Equipment, consumables or chemicals that one laboratory no longer needs, find a new home through Wasteless instead of being thrown away. In this way, valuable instruments, unused reagents and other products are recycled and reused, instead of gathering dust or ending up as waste. This approach encourages a circular economy in science, thus reducing the waste of useful resources, while at the same time laboratories save money on procurement. It is especially useful for smaller institutions and school laboratories with a limited budget, for which such platforms provide access to more affordable work supplies.

Smart lab practices in 2025 show how technology and conscious working methods can work together to advance science. Digitalization and AI accelerate research, sustainability and smart procurement reduce costs and protect the environment, while improved security protects people and equipment. Such modern laboratories more efficiently turn investments into concrete results, which ultimately benefits society.
